This December, the centre of Dunchurch welcomed the village’s famous Lord John Scott statue in its seasonal costume. This year it was dressed as Chase from Paw Patrol. Villagers and visitors appreciated the playful transformation, which has become a much-loved part of Dunchurch’s holiday celebrations.
The statue commemorates Lord John Douglas Montagu Scott, a 19th-century Scottish MP and local landowner, and has stood at the heart of the village for generations. The festive dress-ups are thought to have started in the 1970s when a group of local residents began dressing the monument each year with costumes inspired by children’s books, TV shows, and films. Over the years it has been dressed as Peppa Pig, Paddington Bear, and more, bringing smiles to all who pass by.
Residents say the tradition brings the community together and adds a sense of fun to the season. Children enjoy spotting the latest costume while adults appreciate the creativity it inspires. The identity of those behind the annual transformations remains a mystery, but the excitement and enjoyment it brings have become as valued as the statue itself.
Each year, the Lord John Scott statue adds a touch of festive cheer to Dunchurch, giving residents and visitors something to enjoy together.
