M45 Thurlaston–Dunchurch Bridge Refurbishment Scheme

Essential maintenance to the Main Street bridge over the M45 (Thurlaston–Dunchurch) will take place from 26 August 2025 to April 2026. Temporary traffic signals and lane closures will be in place. Pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained.

Published: 30 July 2025

National Highways will shortly begin essential maintenance work on the Main Street bridge over the M45. These works are being carried out to ensure the ongoing safety and structural integrity of the bridge.

What Work is Being Carried Out?

The refurbishment scheme will include:

  • Installation of a new waterproof membrane to protect the bridge

  • Concrete repairs to the bridge structure

  • Upgrades to the vehicle safety barriers

  • Resurfacing of the carriageway and footways

These improvements are vital to ensure the long-term use and safety of this key route.

Timeline and Traffic Management

Start date: 26 August 2025
Estimated completion: April 2026

To safely complete these works, National Highways will implement the following traffic management:

  • Main Street Bridge (Thurlaston–Dunchurch):
The bridge will be reduced to a single lane, with temporary traffic signals in operation throughout the works. A minimum 3.0m lane width will be maintained to allow safe access for all vehicle types.
Pedestrian and non-motorised access (e.g. bicycles) will be maintained throughout.

  • M45 below the bridge:
The M45 will remain open to traffic, but will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.

  • Closures:
There will be short closures of the M45 at the start and end of the scheme to allow installation and removal of scaffolding.
Some short overnight closures of local roads may also be required later in the programme – National Highways will notify residents in advance with dates and diversion details.

Minimising Disruption

National Highways are aware that Main Street provides the only vehicle access into and out of Thurlaston, and every effort is being made to ensure this access is maintained safely.

Access for emergency vehicles and essential services will be maintained at all times.
