Update on Local Government Reorganisation in Warwickshire

The Government has announced that plans for Local Government Reorganisation in Warwickshire are set to move forward again, with two new unitary councils proposed. The six Warwickshire councils have now issued a joint response.

Published: 1 November 2026

The Government has announced the latest update on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Warwickshire, following the review and pause announced in September 2026.

On 29 October, the Government has indicated that it intends to restart the reorganisation process in Warwickshire, based on the proposal to create two new unitary councils. This would see one council covering North Warwickshire, Nuneaton and Bedworth, and Rugby, and a second covering Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick.

This follows the Government’s earlier decision in July 2026 to establish two unitary councils in Warwickshire, which was subsequently paused as part of a wider review of local government reorganisation across England.

The six councils in Warwickshire, including Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council, have issued a joint statement in response to the latest announcement.

The councils have confirmed their commitment to working together constructively and responsibly as the process moves forward. They have also highlighted the importance of protecting the services that residents, businesses and communities rely on, supporting council staff and ensuring that the transition to new local authorities is carefully planned.

Further clarity is now awaited from the Government regarding the timetable, funding and next steps. The councils have confirmed that the new unitary authorities are expected to be in place from April 2029.

The Government’s announcement represents a further step in the reorganisation process, rather than a final decision. There will be a further period for representations before final decisions are made.

Dunchurch Parish Council will continue to monitor developments and share further updates as more information becomes available.
