Dunchurch Nature Watch

Helping nature thrive right on our doorstep Dunchurch Nature Watch is a volunteer-led group caring for local wildlife, green spaces, and footpaths. Through practical action, learning, and community events, we aim to protect and celebrate the nature that makes our village special.

About Dunchurch Nature Watch

Dunchurch Nature Watch brings people together who care about the natural environment in and around our village. From birds and hedgehogs to spinneys, footpaths, and green spaces, the group works to protect, improve, and enjoy these habitats through practical projects, learning opportunities, and community events.

Projects and Activities

The group undertakes a variety of projects to support local wildlife and green spaces, including:

  • Caring for Cawston Spinney

Volunteers help maintain this beautiful local green space through activities like litter picks, habitat improvements, and wildlife monitoring.

  • Working with the Library & School

Dunchurch Nature Watch partners with the local school and community hub to run displays and events, like the Big Garden Birdwatch, inspiring residents of all ages to notice and celebrate local wildlife.

  • Community Events

The group organises talks, film screenings, and nature walks to share knowledge about local wildlife and encourage people to engage with the natural world around them.

How You Can Support Wildlife in Dunchurch

Even small actions can make a big difference for local wildlife:

🐦 Food
Keep bird tables and feeders topped up with fat balls, peanuts, or sunflower hearts. Clean them regularly to prevent disease.a bird sitting on top of a bird feeder

💧 Water
Provide a birdbath, shallow dish, or small pond. In freezing weather, defrost with warm water, and keep a small hole open in ponds for frogs and newts.Green aquatic plants float in a dark water basin.

🌿 Shelter
Create log or stick piles for insects and frogs, leave leaf piles for hedgehogs, and always check bonfires before lighting. Winter is also a great time to clean or put up nest boxes for spring.

🌱 Let Nature Be
Delay garden tidy-ups and leave seed heads standing to provide food and shelter for overwintering insects and birds.A bunch of flowers that are in a vase

🎁 Support Wildlife Charities
Consider gifts from organisations such as the RSPB, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Woodland Trust, or Plantlife.
